Clean Your Grimy Gutters
If you ask how to clean your own gutters, you'll get lots of suggestions – from the safe to the insane! You'll save money and hassle by choosing the best method for you…
Cost
By opting to clean your own gutters, you swerve the cost of paying someone to do it for you. You also dodge the repair bills clogged gutters can bring.
Your gutters get blocked and sometimes even broken by the debris stuffed in by the seasons. Leaking water damages walls, roofs, wood, paint and maybe even the foundations of your home.
Tools
The tools traditionally used to clean your own gutters are: ladder, container, shovelling implement and gloves.
Safety
For safety, it's important you check the condition of your ladder before climbing it. If you find any worn, bent or broken areas, your ladder may be hazardous and you should seek an alternative.
Once you climb the ladder, start to clean your own gutters by shovelling the debris into your container.
Overreaching
Be careful not to overreach while working. Your hand and two feet should always be firmly on the ladder. If you try to stretch too far, you lose these three points of contact. So, when you've finished cleaning an area you can reach comfortably, descend and reposition your ladder
Grounded
No excuses – if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you can still clean your own gutters. Extendable poles with brushes, leaf blowers, vacuum cleaners and power washers are all used to scoop, suck and flush debris away. Some are available with special attachments and some are extended DIY style. Safety goggles are especially beneficial when working from below
Prevention
If you're keen to avoid any maintenance, fitting gutter guards to keep your gutters clean may be the right solution for you
