How To Declutter Your Things When Moving Home

Moving is a time for fresh beginnings and that includes allowing yourself to declutter.

Moving home is a stressful experience at the best of times and when you’re packing up your old home you’ll find yourself wondering why you’ve kept half the things in there (and end up taking them to the new home anyway). Moving is a time for fresh beginnings and that includes allowing yourself to declutter.

There’s no better time to declutter your trinkets that you’ve picked up along the years then when moving home. To do so, set yourself up with three different boxes and a whole bundle of bin bags. Label the boxes ‘Keep’, ‘Sell’ and ‘Storage’. The bin liners are for everything that you want to get rid of, that will go to the skip or in the bin. These will (hopefully) outnumber the boxes by quite some way. The rest is pretty simple; just work through things one room at a time and then you can easily see how much work you’ve done, making it much easier to get on with the next lot.

While that sounds like the simplest of tasks, it can be hard to get rid of things that hold sentimental value. You might want to pile them up separately for a while if you’re really unsure about what you want to do with them. When you’re about an hour from finishing, make sure to look through this pile again and see how you feel about these things. The more stuff you find the courage to get rid of, the more fun you have with this process and you’ll find it easier to get rid of other things that hold sentimental value. When you’re using this method you’ll want to get rid of everything at the end of the day; it reduces the risk of you waking up the next day and changing your mind.

Of course, sometimes decluttering takes the form of piles of things that we’ve been intending to deal with for a long time. What about the stacks and stacks of paperwork that we’ve just not started working through and that really need shredding? Well, it’s a great way to start decluttering as it’s a job to start your workload – you already know what you’re doing with the paperwork and you can tick it off your list nice and easy! You’ll feel much better once you start and it’ll push you into decluttering elsewhere.

Whether you’ve already moved into your new home or you’re packing your stuff up to ship out, decluttering is probably at the top of your list of what you want in your new house. A few simple things might take hours to sort out this time round but this may help you learn from your mistakes. Once you’ve decluttered, staying on top of how much stuff you end up with in the future is key. So, whether you adopt a “one in, one out” policy or just set aside a couple of hours a month to sort out piles that are starting to form, you’ll feel much better for it.
