Fitting a curtain pole is something many of us have managed to avoid doing. Often, a home will already have these fitted, making it simple and easy for us to get away with not doing it.

However, one day you may need to know how to fit them, so we’ve provided an easy to follow set of instructions to get you on your way.

What you will need:

  • Pencil
  • Spirit level
  • Curtain pole
  • Curtain rings
  • Curtain finials
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • Wall plugs (type will depend on weight of pole and curtains)
  • Screwdriver

Ensuring there are no pipes or cables in the wall is the first step. Usually, electrical wires will run up and down from any electrical products or plug sockets so if you have any of these in the area, you will need to use a cable, pipe and stud detector. If you have no known electrics or waterworks/heating in the surrounding area, you should be good to go.

Where you choose to place your curtain, pole depends on the available space around your window. As a rule, you want to be fitting it about 10-15cm above the window recess, but this can differ depending on personal preference, curtain length and the actual space available.

First, use a spirit level to mark out the pole position based on the desired drop and width of the curtain. Start with the centre point, measuring halfway between the window, mark this and then measure from the midpoint the drop required this will give you the position of the centre bracket.

Once you have the length, do the same for the curtain width. Measure out about 15cm either side from the window recess (this depends on the width of your curtains).

Once this bit is done, you just need to mark out your bracket’s position using a pencil. Drill some holes for your fixings and insert the appropriate wall plugs, then fit the brackets in place.

When fitting your curtain pole, you want the length to exceed the support brackets by a few centimetres. Once you are happy with the length of your pole, place this onto the brackets (if using curtain rings make sure they have been put on the pole first and leave one outside the bracket on either end to secure the curtains). Finally, place your decorative curtain finials on.

And there you have it! You’re now ready to dazzle everyone with both your internal decorative style and tales of your DIY prowess.
