Buying tools cheap may seem like the most practical idea, but chances are they’ll go bust after a short time. If you invest in fairly decent equipment, then your toolbox will last you for years!
Saw
Any toolbox needs a universal hand-saw, about 20 inches in size. This will be handy for a lot of your DIY jobs and whether you buy plastic or wood, we recommend you buy one at a minimum of £8.
Claw Hammer
You can buy hammers from a range of hardware stores for any price. We recommend the claw ones as they’re great for removing nails.
Retractable Tape Measure
Where would you be in your DIY project if you couldn’t measure things? You can buy a decent one for about £5.
Spanner
Handy when dealing with various nuts and bolts, we advise you spend about a tenner on a 10 inch adjustable spanner.
Wrench
Similarly to the spanner, we recommend you spend about a tenner on one of these – they’re ideal for pipes and plumbing fittings.
Screwdrivers
Probably one of the most used things in a toolbox, you can buy a decent set for £15 if you shop around. Don’t go too cheap on these as the tips can break.
Pliers
Perfect for fiddly jobs, pliers are used for gripping and can cost about £8.
Allen Keys
A must-have for most furniture jobs, Allen keys are used to tighten and slacken things. These usually come in packs with a range of different sizes and at a good price of about a fiver.
Of course there are a whole range of tools that you might need for various DIY projects, but these basics should keep you out of trouble. Many DIY stores provide ready prepared tool boxes so you don’t need to buy the items separately, although be sure to check online reviews for the quality.
