Getting ready: What tools do you need to put up a shelf?

It's going to depend on the type of wall and shelves you have, but these are the basics: shelves, shelf brackets, drill, pipe detector (optional), spirit level, pencil, screws and wall plugs.

Having a pipe detector will help you to find any potential hazard behind the walls, such as pipes, cables, etc. However, if you don't have one, try knocking on the wall until you hear a solid sound and avoid drilling above plug sockets.

Let's get started: Putting up a shelf in 6 easy steps

  1. Hold your shelf against the wall at the desired level and draw a horizontal line from this point using a spirit level and a pencil

  2.  Now hold the shelf bracket against the wall and mark the fixing holes' positions

  3. Following the marks you just made, screw the bracket into place with your drill. Depending on the type of wall, you might need to use wall plugs (for instance, if it's masonry)

  4. Place the shelf on top of the brackets and mark with the pencil the holes where you'll have to drill to join them together

  5. Put down the shelf and drill the holes, following the marks. Remember to change the drill's bit to the ones adapted to your shelf material. For instance, if you have a wooden shelf, use a wood bit

  6. Finally, screw the shelf to the brackets

Follow these simple steps, keep safety in mind and enjoy your new home decor! Easy, right?
