  • Before you start work, ensure you use a cable detector to check for cables or pipes before you drill or nail into floors, walls or ceilings

  • Store tools in a safe place in-between jobs, to avoid tripping or creating a hazard for children or pets

  • Wear rubber soled shoes if working with electricity

  • Ventilate the area by keepings windows and doors open so that you’re not breathing in toxic fumes

  • Always ensure you’re wearing the correct safety gear such as ear plugs, eye protection and face masks

  • Make sure you've got the right tools for the job and that they're in good condition, including leads and plugs on electrical tools

  • Don’t lean to one side on a ladder and always ensure it is erected properly and placed carefully in position. Ladders are a major culprit for accidents

  • Try to have someone else with you while you work, so they can help if there's an accident

  • You are far more likely to have an accident if you tackle DIY jobs at speed so always plan carefully and take your time

If in doubt – consult a professional!
