DIY Safety Tips
DIY is a national pastime and, with a multitude of television programmes showing us ‘how to’, it’s tempting to get underway immediately. But, before you start, here are our top safety tips.

- Before you start work, ensure you use a cable detector to check for cables or pipes before you drill or nail into floors, walls or ceilings
- Store tools in a safe place in-between jobs, to avoid tripping or creating a hazard for children or pets
- Wear rubber soled shoes if working with electricity
- Ventilate the area by keepings windows and doors open so that you’re not breathing in toxic fumes
- Always ensure you’re wearing the correct safety gear such as ear plugs, eye protection and face masks
- Make sure you've got the right tools for the job and that they're in good condition, including leads and plugs on electrical tools
- Don’t lean to one side on a ladder and always ensure it is erected properly and placed carefully in position. Ladders are a major culprit for accidents
- Try to have someone else with you while you work, so they can help if there's an accident
- You are far more likely to have an accident if you tackle DIY jobs at speed so always plan carefully and take your time
