How To Paint Your Home

Ceiling:
Tip: If you’re going to redecorate your ceiling, it is recommended that you do this before working on the walls:
- Make sure you have a stable, raised surface to work from – if possible, one that lets you reach the whole length of the ceiling.
- Working at height can be dangerous, so employ a qualified tradesperson if you’re in any doubt.
- Alternatively, buy an extension pole for your roller. If you’re using a roller to paint ceilings, apply paint at an angle of about 45°.
Walls:
Tip: Unless the surface you’re painting is in good condition, you’ll need to apply an appropriate primer, such as a metal primer for radiators or a wood primer for skirtings:
- First, it’s advisable to paint skirtings/trim before walls – once these dry, you can tape them off and begin painting your walls.
- Start on an unpainted area each time you put more paint on your brush or roller, working back towards your previous strokes to blend in the edges.
- Eliminate drips by getting rid of excess paint – after loading with paint, tap your brush firmly on the tin or scrape down your roller with a blunt edge.
- Tidying as you go will help reduce the clean-up job at the end, so wipe up paint splatters as they happen using a clean, damp cloth.
- If you can’t easily paint behind a radiator using a mini roller with a long handle, you may need to remove it. To do this, turn all the valves off, then drain the radiator into a suitable container. Please count the number of turns needed to close off the valve, so you know how to reset the valve to its original position when replacing the radiator.
