How To Put Up Coving

Coving can be installed to add a statement to the joint that connects the wall and the ceiling. Other times, they are useful in concealing unsightly cracks or hiding wires. Whatever your purpose is in fitting coving, here is a practical guide you can follow.

You’ll need:

  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Mitre box
  • Handsaw
  • Adhesive
  • Coving
  • Sponge
  • Hammer
  • Nails

Steps:

  1. Start by taking the measurements of your coving.  Mark the spots on the wall and ceiling using the spirit level for your reference.
  2. In order to strengthen the bond of the cove, use a craft knife to score between the wall and ceiling lines.  Remove any scrap or loose paint.
  3. You must use a mitre box to cut the coving.  This ensures that the corners fit snugly together and that you won’t waste any of your coving.
  4. Secure the coving sections into the mitre box properly.  The coving should fit snuggly to the mitre box to make sure they will be held securely once you start sawing them.  A slight movement can result in a lousy coving output, so be careful.
  5. Use a saw to cut the cove sections.
  6. Apply a generous amount of adhesive to the back of the coving.
  7. Position the cove section on the wall, following your marked guide.  Press down firmly so the adhesive begins to stick.
  8. Remove any excess adhesive using your fingers or a sponge.
  9. To keep the section in place, use a hammer and tap small nails into the wall, just under the coving.
  10. Repeat steps 6 to 9 until all your sections are in place.
  11. Press the joined coving sections together.  Apply adhesive to the coving section’s edges and joints.
  12. Remove excess adhesive.  Allow the adhesive to dry.  This can take up to 24 hours.  Once the adhesive has dried out, remove the supporting nails carefully.

Now that your room has a lasting touch, you can finish it off with your desired paint colour to match your wall or ceiling.
