- Use up the contents of your freezer or arrange for freezer space elsewhere
- Turn your freezer off. Remove any remaining food and shelves
- Newspapers and towels placed on the floor around the freezer are a great way to soak up the excess water
- Leaving your freezer to defrost overnight is very practical and safe
- If you need to speed up the process, fill a large pan with boiling water and place it inside the freezer and close the door. The steam will melt the ice and the pan may catch the blocks of ice as they fall
- If you have a steam wallpaper stripper then your freezer cleaning days no longer have to be an effort. The steam cuts through the ice like a knife through butter and is probably the quickest way to get everything defrosted. Ensure you take care when using electrical appliances around water
- Once you have everything de-iced, dry all the excess water so there is less chance of ice forming after you turn the freezer back on
- Rubbing on a little olive oil or Vaseline is a great way to prevent your appliance over-freezing again
- Before putting food back, leave your appliance to freeze for the manufacturer’s recommended time frame
