Top Tips For Buying a New Bed

We spend a third of our life in bed, so it’s important to choose the right one. Focus on support and comfort, the ease of getting in and out, the size, if it has storage drawers and much more.

  • You get what you pay for, so don’t skimp on a bed if you can afford not to.  A decent mattress can do wonders for your back and posture but it’s hard to get top quality for a low price – so look for the frequent sales offers at furniture stores and you may get up to 50% off

  • Ask the sales advisor’s advice.  You may think you need a firm or soft mattress, but many beds offer support and comfort tailored for specific weight and build recommendations

  • Compare lots of different beds to find your favourite.  Don’t settle for the first one you lie on

  • Buy a bed from an outlet offering a 40-night guarantee.  If your mattress isn’t for you then you can swap it, providing a fitted mattress protector was used

  • Don’t try the mattress alone – you need to make sure that it works well with the base

  • Wear comfortable clothes to the shop and lie down on a bed in your standard sleeping position.  Toss and turn a little and see how comfy it is

  • Lie down on the bed with your other half.  This way you can assess if you’ll both be comfortable and whether or not you’ll be fighting for space

  • Not all ‘double’ or ‘king’ sized beds are the same size in each shop.  Be sure to check the dimensions, especially if you’re buying the base and mattress from separate stores

  • Remember that the mattress you try in-store has probably had previous customers testing it, which can reduce its firmness over time.  Some find that their new bed is harder than they had anticipated because of this factor.  Ask a sales advisor how long the mattress has been on display
