If you have a water leak then it could take time to get through to the right people, giving the water plenty of time to damage your goods and add to your bill! So try these tips first.

If there is a leak:

  • Turn off the main stop-tap in your home to shut off your home’s water supply – this is usually under a kitchen sink or in a services cupboard.

  • If you live in a house, there will also be a stopcock outside your home, e.g., in the driveway – this is usually for use by your supplier.

  • If the leak is coming from a water-using appliances, e.g., a washing machine, check if there’s an isolator valve near the appliance and turn this off.  This will shut off the water to this appliance only.

  • Minimise damage by placing a bucket or plastic bag and towel under any drips and mopping up standing water.

  • Contact your water supplier – most have a 24 hour line for leaks.

If your home loses water supply:

  • Check with your neighbours to see whether they are also affected.

  • Contact the managing agent (if applicable) to check whether this loss of supply is due to local maintenance works.

  • Phone your water supplier to report the issue – most have a 24 hour line for supply or drainage emergencies.

  • If you need to flush a toilet without any water supply, pour half a bucket of water down it to flush it manually.
