Protecting Your Outdoor Space In Winter
Harsh weather is an expected aspect of a British winter. Make sure your outside space remains in top condition, ready for you to enjoy it again in spring with these tips:

Gutters
If you live in a freehold property, clear gutters, check for loose tiles and check that any areas of flat roof are securely sealed. Do not lean ladders against guttering, as this can distort them. Working at height can be dangerous, so if in any doubt employ a contractor to do this for you.
Furniture and Barbecues
If you’ve got a barbecue or any metal garden furniture outside, cover it up or bring it inside to avoid the potential for rust.
Tools
Clean and dry your tools with an old cloth, adding a touch of linseed oil to blades to keep them sharp.
Pots and Containers
Wash, dry and store pots and containers, to help keep winter pests and diseases that may infect new plants at bay.
Gardens
- If you have a garden, check any trees for loose or overhanging branches that could cause damage in a storm and remove these
- Check that any fencing is secure and will hold up to winter winds
- Protect the tender bark of young trees by wrapping the trunks with wire or a commercial tree-guard product
- Screen evergreens from drying winter wind and sun by setting up burlap screens or shelters
Lawns
Protect the lawn by removing fallen leaves throughout the winter months. Leaf-blowers and grabbers can make quick and easy work of this important job.
