How To Prevent Your Garden Taps From Freezing

An external tap makes watering your lawn and garden plants easy, but this tap is vulnerable if water is allowed to freeze inside the pipes. So in the cold season, drain and protect it:

  • Turn off the water supply to the tap, using the isolator valve.  This is usually found inside your home on the wall where plumbing feeds to the outside tap

  • If there isn’t an isolator valve for the outside tap, or you’d prefer not to put the tap out of service, you can use a thermal jacket to insulate it instead

  • After turning off the water supply to the tap, leave the tap on, so any remaining water can drain away

  • Invest in an outside tap cover, which is insulated to protect against frost

  • Once the cold weather has passed, you can turn the supply back on and start using the outside tap again
