Stay Safe Living on a Construction Site

If you are the proud owner of a brand new home, the chances are that construction may be ongoing during your move and for a while afterwards. How should you approach the short-term challenges of living ‘on site’?

2 minute read

If your developer is still building after you’ve moved in, they will try to keep noise, dust and other disturbances to a minimum. Whilst they complete the remaining homes to the required standards, they are obliged to ensure there will be no risk to new residents. Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so here is some good advice:

  • Look out for vehicles and machinery and ensure the operator has seen and acknowledged you before you pass

  • Follow all road signs carefully and note developers may have to temporarily change routes

  • Never go into a construction area without permission

  • Use the marked routes and watch your footing, as paths and roads may have uneven surfaces

  • Drive cautiously, as roads may not have their final finish and surfaces may be uneven

  • Keep away from excavations and trenches

  • Look out for delivery vehicles and construction traffic

  • Avoid scaffolding and stacks of material

  • Don’t climb ladders or scaffolding, material stacks or any part of the construction

  • Be aware of sharp objects and the possibility of wet paint, adhesives, concrete, etc.

  • Street lighting may not be complete, so take extra care when it’s dark

  • Keep an eye on pets and ensure any children know about the dangers of building sites
