How To Lay Artificial Grass
A great landscape can go a long way when it comes to adding value to your home. While natural grass makes an aesthetically pleasing and wonderful addition to most landscapes, it can be extra challenging to maintain. This is where you can start to see the advantages of artificial grass.
2 minute read
Artificial grass makes an amazing low-maintenance substitute to a natural lawn. Thinking about laying your own artificial grass lawn but don’t know how to get started? Follow our DIY guide and you’ll be well on your way to an easily maintained lawn.
Why artificial grass?
Maintaining a natural grass lawn requires hard work. From the need to regularly water, to pulling out stray weeds and mowing, natural grass care can truly become time-consuming. Choosing artificial grass instead offers you the following advantages:
- Low-maintenance
- Durable and long lasting
- Easier to install compared to growing your own lush natural grass
- Easy to clean
- Designed with easy drainage in mind
Things to consider
The following are important things you should consider when you’re going to order artificial grass:
Density and thickness of the artificial grass
- Depending on where you place it, you need to determine how thick you want your synthetic grass to be. Thick and heavy density grass may work best for areas that cater to more foot traffic.
The colour of the grass
- Choosing more colours will help make your synthetic lawn look realistic.
The pile of the grass
- This refers to how your grass blades will turn out. It affects various things, including not only the look of the grass, but the texture and the softness as well.
Things you will need:
- Artificial grass underlay
- Self-adhesive joining tape
- Artificial grass adhesive
Tools: (These can always be rented)
- Sod cutter
- Wheelbarrow
- Spade
- Landscape rake
- Compactor
- Hammer
- Knee kicker
- Nails
Steps:
- Get the measurements of the area where you will be installing your artificial grass. Mark the areas for your grass rolls.
- Use a sod cutter or shovel to cut the grass and other unwanted weeds from the marked areas. Remove the topsoil and clear the area from stray roots and big rocks. The goal is to ensure the area you lay the grass is clean and as smooth as possible.
- Use the landscape rake for rough grading the area. Water the ground lightly and use the compactor to compact the area.
- Apply a weed control fabric or weed killer to prevent unwanted vegetations to grow over the area later on.
- This is optional, but you can add more cushion to the surface by applying a layer of shock-absorbent materials.
- Roll out the artificial grass. Join the grass using the joining tape or grass adhesive as needed.
- Align the synthetic grass, ensuring they fit tight into the corner.
- Cut and trim the grass around the edges. This is particularly important if you don’t have a square or rectangular lawn. It will give you neat edges and a smart finish.
- Secure the grass by nailing it into place.
And there you have it. Gone will be the days of looking out the window and wondering when you’ll get the time to cut the grass (or when the weather will allow you to do so).
