Polystyrene eggs are amongst the easiest to decorate. With their versatility as a blank canvas, you can create anything. From Minions to farm animals, the only thing holding you back is your creativity. If you fit a loop to the top of the egg prior to decorating, you’ll be able to hang it up when you’re done.
Minions
- Paint one half of the egg yellow and the other blue. Allow it to dry before adding the detail
- With a fine paintbrush, add the two blue lines for the dungarees. You might also like to cover the blue in glitter to add a little shimmer
- Add some googly eyes with a little PVA glue and trace around them with black paint or a Sharpie for the goggles
- Don’t forget to add a smile and a maybe a strand of hair, and you’re on your way to building an army of Minions
Superheroes
Eggs don’t have to be boring! You can always try creating your favourite heroes in egg form. Failing this, come up with your own superheroes. Remember, you don’t have to be constrained with the egg as the canvas. It can always be used as a body and pipe cleaners can form legs and arms. Don’t forget to add the cape!
Pokémon
Pikachu is a firm favourite and is relatively easy to create.
- Paint the egg yellow and allow to dry
- Add two horizontal stripes of orange on the back and two red cheeks on the front. This can either be done in paint or with felt tips
- Cut a pipe cleaner into thirds and use one to form Pikachu’s zigzag tail and two to form the ears. Simply poke into the polystyrene to attach
- Finish off Pikachu’s face with an open mouth smile and a pair of eyes
- If you’re feeling really creative, you can paint an egg in the form of a Pokéball to have alongside Pikachu
Farm animals
In-keeping with the Easter theme, chicks are relatively easy to create. You can also use feathers here for an authentic look. Horses, cows and pigs also transfer well to egg form and look great on a background of straw.
Harry Potter
As well as painting The Deathly Hallows symbol on blank eggs, you can also create dragon eggs or the Triwizard egg using gold foil. You don’t have to put in a lot of effort to create some stunning designs.
As long as you have some paint, googly eyes and a good selection of Sharpie pens, the world will be your oyster. Ask your child what they want to make and work from there; they’ll want to be involved if it’s their choice of theme. Working together, you can be as eggcentric as you wish.
