Countdown To Your Move: 3 Weeks To Go

In the last few weeks before your moving date it is a good idea to get prepared. The checklist below suggests tasks that you may find useful in getting ready for the move.

  • Contact removal firms to get estimates. Remember to ask about packing and unpacking services, if you would like these, and whether they provide boxes. Ensure the firm has comprehensive insurance cover against damage or loss of your belongings. It is a good idea to reserve with more than one company until you are sure the arrangement is concrete, to avoid being let down. You should also choose a firm with some trade accreditation, such as membership of the British Association of Removers (BAR). The BAR can be contacted on 01923 699480 or at www.bar.co.uk

  • Start collecting suitable packing boxes, if the removal firm does not provide them, and pack things that you will not need until after you have moved

  • Start to pack up non-essential items. Label all boxes clearly with the contents and the room they belong in

  • If required, book a qualified electrician, gas installer and plumber to disconnect appliances at your old address and re-fit them at your new address

  • Check that your home contents insurance policy will cover you at your new address and during your move, or get quotations

  • Write to all relevant companies to inform them of your change of address. Our handy checklist of people and companies you may need to contact is a good start

  • Confirm any school transfers, if necessary

  • Arrange for water, electricity, gas, telephone and other accounts at your current address to be paid and closed. Do not forget to register with the service providers at your new address
