- Turn the water off when you’re washing your hands and lathering them.
- Shower instead of having a bath – a full tub requires a lot more water.
- Use leftover water from rinsing fruit and vegetables to water your houseplants.
- Wash darker clothes in cold water. Not only does it save water and energy, but it helps your clothes retain their colour.
- Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water so you’re not running the tap when washing dishes.
- Refilling a water bottle each day cuts down on the number of glasses to wash.
- Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrub them clean.
- Reuse the leftover water from cooked or steamed foods to make a healthy soup.
- Using the right size pan saves unnecessary water wastage.
- Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you could save over 600 litres per month. Try to keep your shower under 5 minutes.
- When running a bath, put in the plug before turning on the water. You can adjust the temperature as the tub fills.
- Turning off the tap while you brush your teeth can save up to 900 litres a week for a family of four.
- Plug the sink when you shave to save up to 1300 litres a month.
- Run your washer and dishwasher only when they are full instead of half loads.
- Don’t throw away your pet’s old water – feed it to the garden plants instead.
- A brick in the toilet cistern can save water on your flush – useful mainly for older style, high volume toilets.
- Know where your master water shut-off valve is located. If a pipe were to burst, this could save litres of water and prevent damage.
