Getting To Know Your Neighbours

Meeting your neighbours can be the first big step in becoming a part of the community, especially if you’ve just moved somewhere completely new. Here’s how you can get to know your neighbours.

Say Hi!

Unlikely to be your biggest priority, especially when you’re lifting heavy boxes, but try to say hello and introduce yourself when you first bump into your neighbours.  If you do have too much to do, give them a little smile – it’ll show you’re friendly and approachable!

Compliment

Who doesn’t love a compliment?  Make sure to comment on how lovely your neighbour’s garden is and ask what types of plants they’re growing.  If they’ve got a baby or a puppy, mention how adorable he or she is.  The key is to show you’re taking an interest, so compliment and then ask about something – you might find you have a lot in common!

Invite Them to Something

If you’re throwing a housewarming party or a BBQ for the family, why not casually invite them around?  It’s informal and an easy way to connect with people, and as there will be lots of people there, there’s less pressure!

Recommendations

Another way to connect with neighbours is to ask for their recommendations.  It’ll give them the opportunity to open up a bit about themselves and why they like certain places, while also giving you all the best places to visit nearby.  It’s also another great way of seeing if you have any shared interests.

Local Groups

Making friends with the neighbours doesn’t necessarily mean they have to live next door to you.  Attend local groups, such as a book club or playdates, if you have kids, and you’ll be sure to make new friends with similar interests.
