Keep Your Home Secure Whilst You're Away
Keeping your home and possessions safe when you are absent can be helped by following a few simple security measures. Use the following as a checklist when you are away from home:

- Remember to lock all windows and remove window keys whenever you are out. Keep keys easily available on your return, in case you need to escape from a fire
- Remember to cancel papers, milk and other regular deliveries before going on holiday. Ask a neighbour to remove free papers and parcels
- Leave lights on in the evening (not just in the hall and landing) using an automatic time switch.
- Leave a radio playing, on a talk station, on a similar time switch. Alternatively, ask a neighbour to come in to switch these items on
- Never leave valuable and easily transportable items, like iPods or car keys, where they can be seen by a potential burglar
- Photograph valuable items and use marker pens to add your postcode and house number, so that your property can be traced if recovered after a theft
- Make a note of all available serial numbers on your possessions
- Register your mobile phone at www.immobilise.com
- Register your bicycle frame number at www.bikeregister.com
- Make sure that the contents of your home are fully insured against fire and theft
- Check the identity of all callers, ask for an ID card
- If you live in an apartment, make sure you don’t let strangers into the building
- If you have a garden, arrange for someone to cut your grass if you are away for a longer period and always lock away garden tools, particularly ladders
