Countdown To Your Move: Moving Day

The day of your move will be very busy, so the checklists below should help make sure nothing important is forgotten:

2 minute read

The day before you move:

  • Empty and defrost the freezer, including the ice compartment of a fridge if you have one
  • Make sure all your appliances are disconnected and fittings are detached ready for the removal company
  • Remove curtains, rugs and any loose floor coverings you are taking with you
  • Finish packing, except for clothing, overnight toiletries, etc., and any food and drink you might need on the day you move
  • Have some cash with you in case of any unexpected expenses
  • Make sure your mobile phone is charged and you have saved any numbers you will need, such as the removal company and your solicitor
  • Pack a bag with some food and drink for when you arrive
  • Clean down all paintwork, work surfaces and items such as sinks, baths, toilets and showers
  • Vacuum the carpets
  • Advise your solicitor of your moving arrangements, so that they can make sure all completion money is received before you arrive on site to collect the keys on the day
  • Make sure arrangements for picking up the keys to your new home are in place
  • Collect and label all keys for your current home
  • Check each room of your home to make sure everything is packed and ready to go

Leaving your old home...

  • If you are driving to your new home, check whether you are likely to be delayed by traffic and make sure your vehicle has enough fuel
  • Pack bed linen in an accessible place ready for the first night in your new home
  • Set aside a box for your kettle, mugs, tea, coffee, etc., and keep it in a place where it can be easily accessed when you arrive at your new home
  • Turn off the central heating and all electrical appliances. If you are moving in the winter months and have a wet heating system, you may want to agree with your buyer to leave the heating on a low setting to prevent any frost damage
  • Make a note of utility meter readings
  • Check all storage spaces and lock all windows and doors
  • Before the removal van leaves, make sure the removal staff have your contact details and the address of the new home. If they ask you to sign an inventory list make sure you check it carefully before signing
  • Collect your keys

Arriving at your new home…

  • If you have used a removal firm, it is a good idea for you to be there when they arrive at your new home – you will be able to show the crew where you want your items placed
  • If you have an inventory list, use it to check off items as they are unloaded
  • Examine your items thoroughly for any damage that may have occurred during transit
  • Check that you have keys for all your door and window locks and test them to make sure they work
  • Inspect your new home for any visible damage – pay special attention to plastered finishes, paintwork, wall tiles, flooring, windows, mirrors, sanitaryware, kitchen fittings and any fitted appliances, and make a note of any defects
  • You may want to do a light clean before you begin unpacking – give cupboards, sanitaryware, floors, etc., a wipe down to remove any dust that may have accumulated
  • If you selected any optional upgrades, make sure they have been fitted
  • Check that your home is receiving its supply of water, electricity, gas and oil (where applicable)
  • Record the meter readings at your new home and the date
  • Make up beds ready for later
  • Remember to take regular breaks to have a drink – be sure to offer refreshments to your removal crew
