- Take reusable bags to carry your shopping, rather than using new ones – most shops now charge 10p or more for new bags, so you’ll also save money by reusing.
- Avoid buying products with unnecessary packaging.
- To stop receiving unsolicited advertising mail, contact the Mailing Preference Service and Royal Mail to register your preference.
- Buy products in packaging that is easier to recycle, such as glass jars and cardboard boxes.
- Recycle wherever possible and take items to your local recycling bank or centre if they aren't collected by the council.
- Only buy food you will use for planned meals and be creative with delicious ways to use leftovers.
- Don’t throw away unwanted items that are in good condition – instead, advertise your unwanted items on websites, such as Freecycle, or donate to charity shops.
- Dispose of electrical items properly by taking them to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
- Some items need to be washed before you recycle them, such as glass jars. Use your old washing up water to give them a quick rinse.
- When shopping look for alternatives to disposable items, i.e., in the long run, rechargeable batteries are cheaper than disposables, and they can be used again and again.
