How To Carve a Pumpkin Like a Pro

Featured

A great jack-o’-lantern starts with the right pumpkin and a little preparation. Follow these simple steps for a cleaner carve and a longer-lasting result.

2 minute read

1. Pick the right pumpkin
Choose one that feels firm, has an even shape and sits flat without wobbling. A sturdy stem is usually a good sign of freshness.

2. Cut the lid at an angle
Instead of cutting straight down, angle your knife towards the centre of the pumpkin. This creates a ledge that helps stop the lid falling inside.

3. Scoop it out thoroughly
Remove the seeds and stringy flesh with a large spoon or pumpkin scraper. Scrape the inside wall where you plan to carve until it’s roughly 2–3cm thick — thinner walls are much easier to cut.

4. Draw your design first
Sketch your face or pattern onto paper, then transfer it to the pumpkin with a washable marker. For detailed designs, tape on a paper template and prick around the outline.

5. Start with the small details
Carve the fiddliest sections first, while the pumpkin is still strong. Work slowly and use small sawing motions rather than forcing the blade.

6. Push pieces out from the inside
Once you’ve cut around a section, gently press it outwards from inside the pumpkin. This helps prevent delicate parts of the design from snapping.

7. Light it safely
Battery-powered LED tea lights are an easy alternative to candles, particularly around children, pets or flammable decorations.

Pro tip: Don’t throw away the seeds. Rinse them, dry them, toss with a little oil and seasoning, then roast until crisp for an easy Halloween snack.
